Our Trip to Sanya, Hainan, China
We went to "the Hawaii of China" (as the tourist material calls it) for our school's spring break, April 25-May 3.  This vacation period was formerly a "Golden Week" when the entire country had off and the prices skyrocketed, but this year the government changed the rule and made only the Thursday and Friday a national holiday.  This meant that we could go and have fun and relaxation in the tropical paradise for a very good price -- that is a vacation Raber style!!!  Kelly and Emily loved the chance to kick back and do nothing but swim and read, but Scott got a wee bit bored after a few days.
A view of Sanya Bay from our hotel room balcony.  The city of Sanya is in the distance.
Kelly and Emily relax by one of the two pools.  This became  a VERY familiar pose for them!
Oh yeah, there was also a lot of time spent in the pools too! And also at the private beach just across the road.  Did I mention that both the pool and South China Sea were a perfectly wonderful  temperature?
Emily liked this pool best, but there was a huge building construction project right next to it, and the noises were a bit distracting to the relaxation mode we had going on.
One day we rode a city bus for 90 minutes to this beach at Yalong Bay.  This is a larger resort area than where we stayed, but both had very clean beaches and crystal blue water.
These motorcycle and sidecars are a common form of transport around Sanya and are very cheap.  We could ride for about 5 miles for 5 RMB (65 cents).
We met this driver and she seemed to find us whenever we stepped out of the hotel wanting to go somewhere!
Sometimes Emily rode on the bike behind the driver, and sometimes she sat by our feet.
The ride is very comfortable and there is always interesting things to look at along the way.
Even after nearly 2 years in China, we still find it photo-worthy when we see a water buffalo, especially one that is walking unaccompanied down the middle of the street!
Does this driver seem a little overdressed for the 85 degree weather, or is it my imagination?  Most of the drivers were dressed like this-- to avoid the sun making their skin dark.
Scenery along the road.  Remember that this is a tropical climate and we wore nothing more than shorts and a T-shirt the whole time we were there.
"We didn't do anything wrong, we swear!  No need to unload the truck and get the Chinese Army after us!"
These photos are just to prove that we didn't spend the entire time on the beach!
Emily displays some of the beautiful shells we collected while walking on the beach.
Kelly enjoys a natural seat in the exposed roots of a tree.  Oh no, someone else has found her secret spot too.....
  ..... and he's still sleeping!
A mother and daughter moment!
Emily enjoys some fresh coconut milk.....or at least she enjoyed the idea of it!

Scott bought a souvenir hat and we thought you would like to see our best modeling poses......

Scott is suave.

Emily is adorable!
And Kelly is apparently made of plastic!!!
Scott has titled this photo "High Maintenance"! This Chinese woman is on vacation on a tropical island, she is in a bathing suit, she is in the South China Sea, and apparently she does not want even one ray of sunshine to hit her body (it is not raining, the umbrella is for shade)!!!
