Shanghai with friends from Home
We had some friends from Washington that were passing through Shanghai so we took a train up to see them. We stayed two nights.
Here's Kelly and Emily riding on the train.
From Shanghai's south railway station we took the subway to a stop near our hotel. The subway system they have works well and is very efficient.
We meet our friends after dinner that first evening in Shanghai.
Sarah, Gracie, and Emily enjoy Shanghai McDonalds ice cream. |
The next day we meet our friends Dawn, Linda, Gracie, and Sarah. We all took the subway to People's Square. We had to pack onto the subway as it was very crowded. From Peoples Square you can walk to Nan Jing Lu, a touristy shopping street in Shanghai. It's fun to walk down this street to look at all the lights and signs. Lu means "road" in Chinese. For about a mile it is pedestrian only.

Of course I gave my pal
Ming a call....
He suited up so Gracie, Emily, and Sarah could meet him and have a picture taken. |
Oh yes...
Let's not forget Kelly. She's a big fan!
Then it was off for a walk down Nan
Jing Lu...
(Did I forget to mention it was crowded)
We found some space to
take a picture.
The Chinese people think our family is quite a site. While I was taking this picture... umm... so were other people (of Kelly and Emily). Yep... They would just pulled up right next to me and take a picture as well. I didn't mind. The people are always friendly. |
Next we stopped off at an outdoor cafe for a little "she-o-she" (that's how ya say "take a rest" in Mandarin). Not so many people were at the cafe, it was a little pricey by Chinese standards. I thought it was pricey too. I have been calibrated to RMB by now. Drinks were about 20 RMB each (that's a little over 2 US dollars). HEY!! Don't laugh! Our family of 3 can go out to dinner for about 30 RMB. He.. He.. I used to be cheap. Now I'm SUPER-Cheap. In case you haven't guessed, it's me (Scott) that is writing this.
Our friends Dawn and
Gracie at the cafe.
The music in the background was all POP music from the States. It was a little weird, all these Chinese people around and English speaking music in the background. I mean every song, if not for the gajillion Chinese people out on the street this could have been a Seattle cafe. |
Shanghai Chaos
Nan Jing Lu walking street
gives way to a street that carries traffic and all those people need to cross
intersections.
I took some video of one
such intersection. I was fun!!

Next we crossed "Under" the river to Pudong (Shanghai east side).
|
|
Then we ate at Pizza-Hut!!
Have you ever seen a Pizza Hut this fancy?
Here's the view from the
Pizza Hut.
It's looks back across the river to the Shanghai financial district (called the Bund). That's not pollution out there, it had got a bit drizzly outside. |
After Pizza Hut we drifted around the Mall that it was in. This was the biggest, fanciest mall I have ever seen. It is 10 stories tall and has circular sections and atriums. It had a very complex and interesting architecture. And guess what? I have no pictures of it. You'll just have to come to Shanghai to see it.
Then it was back across the river where we hoped in taxis to take us back to our hotels for a rest.
Kelly, Dawn, and Scott went back to Nan Jing Lu for the night scenes!
Oooooooo... |
Ahhhhhhhh...... |
Ohhhhhh.....
The next morning we
stopped by our friends hotel to say good bye....
There were flying back to
the States.
